I love this picture. It is very typical for Aiden to sit right here, on the edge of the recliner and talk to me. Yesterday was a different day in our house...the energy was a bit different. Aiden was feeling pretty tired, and after the weekend I had I was too. The day continued to unfold, and we were both engulfed in different tasks and activities, but, there was a point where I just sat down, and this sweet little boy did the same. He sat right there, on the arm of the recliner and just looked at me.
I asked Aiden if he was ok, and inquired if he wanted to talk. His quick response was so sweet, "not really...I'm just tired...I just wanted to sit by you...that's all." We both sat there for what turned into about 20 minutes, and I think combined we spoke about 15 words. We were both just exhausted, and that was ok. Sometimes words are not always needed. Sometimes it is ok to just be near one another. I love that. I love that we do not always need to speak to get our point across.
Non-verbal communication in my opinion is just as important as verbal. The way we treat one another non-verbally is important. Each time I pass one of my children I always try to rub their back, rub their head...something. In fact, yesterday when I was tucking in Aiden...somewhere in my exhaustion I forgot the way I always pull the blankets up, tuck him in tightly...then lean down and hug him so warmly. Last night I just pulled up the blankets, and tucked him in..I think I rubbed his head for a minute...once I went to walk away my sweet little boy reminded me, "Mom, you always hug me after..did you forget?" See, even they remember the non-verbal things we do. Everyone needs affection...I believe that, even those who are not as affectionate. We all need to feel loved.
