When we think of the term "sidetracked," we often associate it with something negative. After weeks of being sidetracked, today I finally came to the conclusion that being "sidetracked," or otherwise consumed is not necessarily a bad thing.
As someone who is very OCD, planned, and organized "sidetracked" is something that is very difficult for me. I am always on top of things and my days are planned weeks in advance-I typically leave no room for "sidetracked," until recently. Becoming sidetracked or otherwise interested in something other than what is right before us can actually be very healthy. It teaches us that not everything must be mapped out, some of the greatest things in history and in life tend to come from being unplanned, unpremeditated, and just a matter of happenstance. Some of this worlds most beautiful architecture, and paintings are known for being a matter of "accident" or "unplanned."
When a new found hobby, or relationship has you sidetracked I think it is ok to embrace that and enjoy it. Our days can become mundane, and I think sometimes those hobbies, interests, or relationships are often tossed at us when we need them most. Now, I must preface anything further with this...when whatever has you "sidetracked" is unhealthy, harmful, or seems to be taking your life down a path that it just should not you should shut the door and simply wait until another more healthy option comes your way.
Gardening, for example is something that has me sidetracked, and while I am finding that my thumb is NOT green...I am still trying, and I am still diligent in getting SOMETHING to grow this year. (ok, I do have a bit of lettuce sprouting up). Sidetracked can give us something to look forward to, something to pour our hearts into, and something to even decompress us. Sidetracked can teach us much about ourselves. Not everything in this life must be planned. Some of my best relationships, and friendships have been a matter of happenstance and I am so grateful for that. Life is not meant to be mapped out on all levels.
