Aiden was written a script during the winter while at the doctors office for a medication which required a double dose that day, and a single dose in the days following. Why? Because this particular antibiotic has a longer half-life than most others and he needed a kick-start first day to push him into health. So, while my little son was on his way to breathing better (we were treating bronchitis) I began thinking about marriage. Does marriage work in this same way?
Do not confuse half-life for shelf-life. Half-life refers to how long something will work, shelf-life is the time in which something stays good. We all know a marriages shelf-life wavers. Marriage will be good...it will be rough...it will be fun...and there are times it will be trying. Let's get back to where we started, half-life. What is a marriages half-life? How long will marriage work when the shelf-life has expired?
It my belief that every relationship, not just a marriage held in matrimony suffers a quick shelf-life. There will be ups and downs in any relationship-there is good and bad in all of us and sometimes it just seeps out. But, when do you know that the half-life has fallen to half of its value? When do you know that the relationship has reached it's terminal half-life?
So, as when you are ill and you try a medication and fail treatment, what does the doctor typically do? He/she will prescribe another form of treatment, right? When do you know that the current form of treatment you are using to aid in your marriage simply is not working? And, more importantly do you just sit and stare at the script pad and pen...or do you pick it up and start writing?
I guess in my experience it all works best when you pick up the pen and start scribbling...you must start somewhere. Where there is God, there is hope :-)
