For most people I am not so certain anything I am about to say is "blog worthy," but, for me it is! This family has ran all over creation today getting errands done! However, our day ended with a very special treat for me, and hopefully our house. We ended at Lowe's, one of my favorite places!
I've always loved a house ornate in beautiful flowers during the spring and summer. Growing up my Mother spent her waking hours, and some of her night hours working outside in her gardens, they were just beautiful. Water gardens, flower gardens, vegetable gardens...she had it all, and it always looked so pristine, so perfect. My Grandfather (when he was still alive) was the same...I suppose that is where my Mother received her green-thumb. I can remember once he retired he was outside all day long working on something. His flowers were just lovely, and he was always walking around outside with a cup of coffee tending them, and checking on them. I look back now as an adult, and Mother, and it was almost like those precious flowers were his children. He always made sure they were taken care of.
I decided earlier in the week when Aiden and I were cleaning up the yard that I needed some gardening gloves, and rubber boots to work outside in....so, today was a big day..while at Lowe's we purchased my first pair of gardening gloves:-) And, at Sam's yesterday I bought three bags of bulbs! (one of which is elephant ears) I realize to most people these are trivial things, but, when you are home all of the time...just going outside, and having something to do is SUCH A TREAT! So, we picked up a few packets of flowering seeds, and I am excited to tell you this year...I'm growing lettuce! I read that and laugh...never did I think I would be ecstatic to be growing lettuce.Yet, isn't it a neat thought to grow what your family eats!? I just do not get the same sense of accomplishment buying a bag of lettuce at the store.
Also, there is much significance in the elephant ears. My Grandfather always had the largest, and most beautiful elephant ears in his front yard. They were just so big! He was always so proud to show them off. When I was outside planting my elephant ear bulbs I dedicated those little bulbs to my "Papaw," and truly hope they flourish. Rob says this year we cannot do a big vegetable garden, but if I'm able to prove I can actually grow lettuce that is not wilty and sad looking we can next year...so keep your fingers crossed! (Also, for the avid gardener...I did not put my flowers into the ground yet....I did my research very well....instead, my mudroom is full of planters and containers where I've planted my bulbs hoping they will be growing by the time to set them out!)
Lastly, we were given an old red radio-flyer wagon by Rob's parents, at the time I thought it would be neat to clean up and pull the kids around in, but, tonight I converted it into a planter. Rob drilled holes for me, and I just had a great time filling it up with potting soil, and planting my little bulbs, and seeds. So, we have our little red wagon, and I have very high hopes for lavish elephant ears!
And, Rob's words of encouragement: " I don't know, you haven't planted anything, you've just made mud!"
