Alright, I do not typically use my blog as a ranting, or venting tool...but, well, it's my blog and today I've decided to do so.
I was in a store yesterday where high volumes of makeup are sold. As I was looking for the perfect contouring powder I overheard a mother say to her what appeared to be 13-14 year old daughter, "NO! You cannot have that colored gloss, makeup is sinful." What I thought? I turned my head quickly to look at the mothers face, hoping I would see a smile, but, this woman was dead serious! Her pre-teen daughter was holding a tube of lightly colored lip gloss to which she sat back down.
This really got me to thinking about when I was around that age. Gosh, I wore lip gloss, light lip color...I did daily. My circle of friends, which were all very good girls wore it as well. In fact, mascara was a daily thing for me as well, and when I had a slight blemish I was learning to just conceal it with a little powder.
I posed the question to my Google search bar this morning, "Is makeup sinful..." nowhere in my research did I find anything reporting makeup to be considered "sinful." Vanity, yes. However, I do not see anything wrong with feeling good about ourselves as women, and with that might come a little bit of makeup.
All of this said, when my little Natalie is 13 or 14 years old...I do not want her face to be painted like a clown, or a streetwalker....but, my goodness if she wants to wear a little gloss, or clear mascara to enhance her beauty I would encourage that. As women much of our esteem is in our appearance. I do not ever want Natalie to believe that her appearance is all that matters however. It is such a tough balance.
My heart broke for this little girl. I wanted to walk up to her Mother and explain to her that there is a right and wrong way for a pre-teen to do her makeup, and that a little bit might be ok. Less is best, but, for crying out loud just give her some lessons!
I have heard the same said for certain cosmetic surgeries, that they are vein and sinful. I know several people who have gone under the knife because their esteem was extremely low due to their appearance. Most of the people have had multiple children, or cancer. Both of which will change your body so quickly. There is something beautiful about being a woman, and I see nothing wrong with embracing what was given to us, and even enhancing what was given to us. This little girl wanted to enhance her lips to a brighter pink...honestly, what is so wrong with that?
