I had allowed Mr. Aiden to load a game on my phone, a "learning train game," he calls it. I let him go outside and play on the trampoline while he played. Goodness, yesterday it was beautiful out! Well...I watched as he began coming in for dinner making his trek into the house....he had no idea I was watching. As he tried to prop the phone up on his tummy to free a hand to open the backdoor he dropped my phone and the glass just shattered. Well, I saw it all...he had no idea I had witnessed the accident.
I went back to finishing up dinner to just see how my sweet little boy would handle the situation. He came to me as I stood by the oven, with his hands behind his back and said, "Mommy what would happen if the windshield on your phone busted?" I informed him that we would need to go buy a new phone more than likely. He immediately began balling...and my heart just broke. I knelt to his level and hugged him, he said "but it was an accident" he brought forth the broken little electronic. He felt so bad. I hugged him tight and explained to him that it was ok, and that accidents happen to everyone even when we try so hard to avoid it. He told me he would give me all of his quarters to buy me a new phone, and I continued to explain to him that wouldn't be necessary that I understood what happened.
I tell you this for a reason. Parenting is hard. It just is. There's your way, my way, her way, his way, and almost everyone has written a book on the topic and how to deal with different personalities of children...but, I think one thing is very universal no matter who the child is.....it's important to display to our kids that accidents happen. There REALLY ARE things in life that are entirely out of our control and we are not immune to things like that.
One day...someone will probably break something of Aiden's...may it be his baby sister, or a friend....who knows....I could trample in his room over a Lego and break it...my son needs to know how to deal with those things.
Kindness in accidents....
